Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire (CPAW)

Wasco County CPAW Final Recommendations

Wasco County was selected as part of a nationwide application process to be a Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire (CPAW)Wasco County was selected as part of a nationwide application process to be a Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire (CPAW) Community in 2018.  Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire (CPAW) provides communities with land use planning solutions to better manage their wildland-urban interface (WUI). Established in 2015 by Headwaters Economics and Wildfire Planning International, CPAW is funded by the U.S. Forest Service and private foundations. The CPAW team includes planners, foresters, economists, researchers, and wildfire hazard modelers. All services and recommendations came at no cost to the community.

Over the course of 2018 the CPAW team conducted three site visits in Wasco County, meeting with local fire professionals, planners, and citizens.  They crafted a report (available here) with several recommendations on how to reduce our County's fire risk through improved Land Use Planning, which included suggestions for ways to update our CWPP in line with current best management practices.  In addition to the report, they provided us with custom built maps of local and landscape level fire hazards, mitigation difficulty, and wildland urban interface/intermix areas across the County, as well as a variety of resources for citizens, planners, and elected officials to use when making decisions about decreasing fire risk.
