There were over 100 stop, yield, warning, and destination signs removed or seriously damaged in Wasco County last year. Sign vandalism has become a major problem in Wasco County.

Removing and defacing signs cause:
Why vandalize signs?
Some of the reasons that are given:
In Wasco County last year, the cost to repair those signs was over $5200.
  • Increased accidents
  • For fun and excitement;
In the United States last year, one out of every 10 signs was either defaced or mutilated.
  • Emergency vehicles to be delayed;
  • Recycle the signs for money;
The yearly cost of sign vandalism in the United States is $50 million.
  • Confusion to motorists;and
  • Poke fun at a rival school; and;
 
  • Increase cost to taxpayer.

What are the Consequences?
   
  • Someone else gets hurt, maybe someone you know and love;
   
  • Recyclers will not pay to stolen signs; and
   
  • Stealing or vandalizing a sign is a misdemeanor.
