Public Health Nutrition Program Assistant

Salary: $2,000.72/mo.
Summary:
To provide support services for program eligibility and issuance of food instruments; to assess and verify participant eligibility for the supplemental food and nutrition education program; to maintain records, perform data entry; check-in participants; schedule appointments; track program participants and provide excellent customer service.
Essential Functions (greater than or equal to 90% of time):
- Perform check-in procedure for daily clinic services and walk-ins as needed.
- Perform clerical duties such as data entry for state data system, scheduling appointments, preparing materials for clinic and classes, reception, filing and phone duty.
- Prepare and send out appointment and missed appointment letters/notices.
- Assess and verify participant eligibility for WIC Federal Supplemental Food and Nutrition Education Program; screen clients for income and residence eligibility; inform eligible participants of program services, requirements, and procedures.
- Perform simple diagnostic procedures to screen for nutritional health problems; administer blood hemoglobin tests; weigh and measure pregnant and lactating women, infants, and children; document information in data system.
- Assess individual participant needs and refer to other community services as appropriate.
- Be able to communicate with outside agencies and community partners in Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam Counties.

Secondary Functions (less than 10% of time):
- Occasional travel to clinics outside of The Dalles, rare overnight travel required.

Scope and Accountability:
- Be able to communicate with outside agencies and community partners in Wasco, Sherman and Gilliam Counties.
- This position has no supervisory or decision making authority.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- High School Diploma or GED required. Two (2) year college degree with experience and/or training in a related field desired.
- Required: excellent secretarial and organization skills; ability to work with minimum supervision; advanced computer skills; proficiency with Microsoft office suite software packages and data entry.
- Ability to: work with accuracy and efficiency; maintain confidentiality; use multi-line telephone, copier, fax and other office equipment as needed; work well with diverse clientele; type 45 wpm.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; ability to maintain accurate and complete records; ability to interview participants with sensitivity to individual needs; and ability to maintain confidentiality; to be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with individuals, whether public or coworker from diverse groups and backgrounds.
Work Environment:
Inviting, busy, noise level is usually moderate. This position involves exposure to bodily fluids. North Central Public Health follows blood-borne pathogens protocol.
