Sheriff :: Animal Control
General Info
Wasco County operates an animal control program for the entire county, including the City of The Dalles. The primary duty of the Animal Control Officer has to do with dog control and dog licensing. The majority of calls deal with stray or at large dogs and occasionally animal abuse.
Animal Control responds to public nuisance dog complaints, animal abuse and cruelty reports, ORS 167.310 Offenses Against Animals, assists other agencies (police, health dept., etc.) with animal problems and enforces local and state animal laws. ORS 609 Offenses Against Animals
The program is funded jointly with Wasco County and City of The Dalles. Wasco County no longer operates the Animal Shelter. The shelter is now operated by Home at Last through an agreement with the county. This has improved cost effectiveness as well as making the shelter more accessible to the public.
Brad Heinige is the Animal Control Officer. Brad has an extensive background in and has received many hours of training to deal with a wide cross section of animal control issues.
